Nurse Maude’s newly opened Palliative Care Hospice on Mansfield Avenue in Merivale called for joinery that could do two jobs at once: meet the practical demands of a clinical health service facility, while feeling nothing like a hospital.
Architects Sheppard & Rout designed a high-end architectural and joinery fitout around this brief, and we worked alongside builder Cook Brothers to deliver joinery across the full facility, from the main communal spaces through to the smaller, functional rooms behind the scenes.
The reception, main interior spaces, and patient corridors feature extensive Spotted Gum timber joinery. This hardwood brings warmth and grain detail into spaces that would otherwise read as clinical, giving patients and their families a sense of home and dignity at a difficult time.
Beyond the communal areas, the project included joinery for family rooms, staff amenities, sluice rooms, and multiple care rooms. Each space carries its own requirements: family rooms and staff amenities needed to feel comfortable and lived-in, while sluice rooms and care spaces needed durable, easy-clean surfaces and hardware that can stand up to daily clinical use.
With years of experience delivering healthcare joinery across the South Island, including hospital wards, nurses’ stations, and aged care facilities, our team had the range and depth of experience needed to manage a project with this many different finishes and functions under one roof.
